Primaire uitkomstmaten
The degree of CPM of q-sense vs cold water immersion:
CPM is defined as the difference in pain intensity scored by the subject on a electronic visual analogue scale (eVAS) between non-conditioned and conditioned stimuli. We will evaluate the difference between CPM by the q-sense and CPM by cold water immersion.
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) is form of endogenous analgesia that is decreased in patients with chronic pain. The CPM paradigm is often used in experiments to determine whether endogenous analgesia of a group of patients is different from healthy subjects. However, the methods used differs between research groups. The q-sense device has been developed to measure CPM by using a thermal conditioning probe and to be able to compare studies. We will compare the ability of the q-sense to induce CPM with the most commonly used method to induce CPM so far: cold water immersion. Furthermore, we will compare ipsilateral with contralateral conditioning.
Doel van het onderzoek
The q-sense device will induce an equal conditioned pain modulation effect as the standard conditioning stimulus: cold water immersion.
Ipsilateral and contralateral conditioning will elicit equal conditioning pain modulation effects.
